Pulse Field Ablation arrives in Geelong

Pulse Field Ablation is a new technology which can be used to treat atrial fibrillation.

Atrial fibrillation is a common heart rhythm disorder that may cause palpitation, shortness of breath, fatigue, and reduced exercise tolerance. It also increases the risk of stroke and heart failure.

Catheter ablation is an established technique for the suppression of atrial fibrillation when medication is ineffective, not tolerated, or not desired.

Unlike traditional methods of catheter ablation using heating (radiofrequency) or freezing (cryoballoon), Pulse Field Ablation uses short electrical pulses to selectively target cardiac tissue and reduce the risk of damage to surrounding structures in the heart. The procedure is quick, efficient, and of comparable success to past techniques.

The Pulse Field ablation for the treatment of atrial fibrillation is now available at SJOG Hospital Geelong and University Hospital Geelong, and is used by Dr Daryl Ridley and Dr Mark Perrin at both locations.
